Amas Yaram's Addiction Treatment
Addiction is a fairly common problem these days. In truth it is probably no more common than it was in the past we are just more aware of the problem. There are a lot of things that you can become addicted to so you do have to be careful. The good news is that there are a lot more treatment options available for addicts than there used to be.
There are lots of different addictions, some of them much more problematic than others. Although they tend to get lumped in all together a gambling addiction is in fact very different than an addiction to smoking which is very different than an addiction to prescription drugs. It is important to understand this since the best treatment option is going to depend on what you are addicted to. One of the biggest misconceptions is that all addictions can be treated in the same way. This is not true, what works for one often does not work at all for other addictions.
A good example of an addiction treatment that works for one type of addiction but not others is the twelve step program. This is pretty much standard when it comes to addiction treatment and in certain cases it works great. Twelve step programs are most associated with alcohol addiction because they have worked very well at treating them. On the other hand twelve step programs have been far less successful at dealing with drug addiction. The reason for this is that the two types of addiction are not the same and they can't be treated the same way.
One of the reasons that twelve step programs are less effective with drug addicts is that the physical symptoms are much more serious for drug addicts. What happens is that the drugs alter the chemistry of the brain. In particular the brain stops producing certain chemicals because it can get them from the drugs, when you stop using the drugs there are serious withdrawal symptoms. These symptoms generally require medication in order to deal with them so a twelve step program is unlikely to be enough on its own. That being said it can work well in conjunction with other treatments.
One important thing to keep in mind when it comes to addiction treatment is that you are going to want to start treatment as soon as possible. There are a lot of people who believe that you have to wait until you hit bottom before treatment will be effective, this is completely untrue. In fact the sooner you start treatment the more likely it is to be successful. One other thing to keep in mind is that despite what a lot of people believe you actually can push somebody into addiction treatment. The effectiveness of the treatment is about the same for people who enter voluntarily and those who are forced into treatment.
