Drug Addiction
Drug addiction is a serious problem that affects a lot of people. The problem with drug addiction is that more than any other type of addiction it takes over your life. Combined with the fact that getting off of the drugs is very difficult the result is that drug addiction will cause serious problems that can be very hard to deal with.
The first thing that you need to understand about drug addiction is that it is a brain disease in which the actual chemistry of your brain is changed as the result of using drugs. This means that it is extremely unlikely that you are going to be able to quit with just will power alone. This is the approach that most people try and it rarely works. In order to quit using drugs you are going to need professional help. The cravings that come with drug addiction can be intense and you will almost certainly not be able to deal with them on your own.
One of the problems that has occurred as the result of drug addiction being referred to as a disease is that a lot of addicts have started to believe that they are helpless victims and that there is no way that they can overcome their addiction. This is certainly not the case, like many diseases it is very possible to recover. It will take a lot of effort on your part and you will need to help to do it but it can be done. Believing that you are the victim of a disease and that you have no control over your drug use is nothing more than an excuse to avoid dealing with the problem.
Another issue that a lot of people face when they have a loved one who is addicted to drugs is what to do about it. There is a belief amongst a lot of people that you can't do anything unless they want your help, that you can't force somebody to quit. This is actually not true, many people who have been forced into drug treatment as the result of pressure from family or friends or by a court have been successful in getting over their addiction. In fact the success rate is about the same for people who voluntarily entered treatment and those who were forced into it is about the same. Therefore if you have a family member with a drug problem you should not hesitate about pushing them into treatment.
It is also important to keep in mind that there is no reason to wait until they hit rock bottom before they seek treatment, this is another common myth. In fact the longer they are addicted to drugs the harder it will be to treat so you should actually push them into treatment sooner rather than latter. The chances of success will be much better if you don't wait until they hit rock bottom.
