Smoking Addiction

Smoking is one of the most common addictions that there is, certainly it is the one that the most people are trying to kick. The problem is that smoking is also one of the most difficult addictions to give up. While it is certainly not easy to quit smoking lots of people have done it. If you are really motivated to quit you should be able to do it.

A smoking addiction occurs when somebody is dependent on smoking cigarettes. In most cases there will be physical symptoms if you try to stop smoking. The reason for the addiction is a chemical in the tobacco called nicotine. It is the nicotine that causes the physical dependence on cigarettes because it has stimulant effect on the brain. This is what makes it so difficult to quit smoking and the reason why most people will use some sort of nicotine replacement while they are trying to give up smoking.

Smoking is of course one of the worst things that you can do to your health. If you smoke for many years you are exposing yourself to all kinds of diseases like emphysema, heart disease and a variety of cancers. In reality if you are lifelong smoker you can be almost certain that you will die of a disease that is related to your smoking. In addition to the health risks there are all kinds of other issues related to smoking ranging from the cost to the smell to the risks that second hand smoke expose other people to. There is no shortage of reasons to quit smoking, unfortunately that is easier said than done.

Almost everybody who smokes is addicted to cigarettes, really there is no other reason that you would smoke. This is what makes it so hard to give up smoking. Fortunately there are lots of products out there to help you deal with your smoking addiction. Some of these are very useful while others will probably not be much help at all. Certainly there are people who have successfully quit smoking on their own but it is not easy. The best place to get help when you are trying to quit is from your doctor. Not only will he be able to offer you some good advice there are also a number of stop smoking aids that require a prescription from your doctor. Often these are the most effective tools.
